Tour Overview

Kilimanjaro trekking Marangu route 5 days itinerary is fairly easy despite of its difficult at the final part to the summit. Termed easier route, the route has encounter a highest failure rate due to bad preparation and untimely attempt. The above situations have moved KINAPA officials to put more emphasis and serious measures for those who climbing Mt Kilimanjaro on Marangu route. All camps along this route have a good radio communication to the park office. Some goods like mineral water, soft drinks, beer and chocolates are available in these camps.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu gate – Mandara hut

In the morning you will be transferred to Marangu gate where you will do registration, do not worry because trekking team will be there to accompany you throughout the mountain days. You will walk through the rainforest of Kilimanjaro with picnic lunch within the journey till you reach Mandara hut Today you aim at reaching to Mandara hut, you will have a walk of 5 hours whereby you will have to cover around 12 km. Dinner and overnight at Mandara hut.

Day 2: Mandara hut – Horombo hut

After breakfast you will soon start climbing, today you will cover about 15 km and spend around 6 hours. You will pass through a short stretch of forest then to the rain forest and moorland. In the early evening you will reach at Horombo hut where you will have dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Horombo hut – Kibo hut

Today you will have another 15 km to cover within around 6 hours. After breakfast in the morning ascend to Kibo hut, you will pass through alpine desert vegetation there are two paths located between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo, which produce the upper route and lower route, the recommended route will be lower route left hand fork which is easier to climb and nearer. You will go to bed early as you will be planning to have a midnight walk to the summit, dinner and early bedtime at Kibo hut.

Day 4: Kibo hut – Summit – Horombo hut

You will notice that today we have a bit heavy task to cover actually the toughest day ever, but it is mentally made easier by knowing it is the day you will be at the highest point of Africa the summit day. You will wake up and begin the walk at the midnight your aim is to reach at the summit in the morning around 7.00. During the climbing time you will have several reference points; William’s Point (5131 metres), Hans Meyer Cave (5258 metres) and then Gillman’s Point (5719 metres. Reaching at the top is wonderful and therefore you will have time to congratulate yourselves, celebrate and take some photos. After all those on the top descend back to Kibo and then Horombo hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Horombo hut – Marangu gate

After breakfast you descend down for about 20 km walk you will reach at Marangu gate in the evening around 16.00 where you will be presented with you certificate of climbing to the highest point of Africa then the transport will be waiting for you at the gate to take you to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
